those crazy asians

hi there,
im cant sleep and am bored so i thought id try and list some silly things that japanese people do.

1. When they point to themselves as in "me?", they point to their nose
2. When they are thinking, instead of making thinking noises like 'um,' 'ah' they suck air through their teeth. This can be quite irritating.
3. Pachinko. Pachinko is a form of gambling where you buy hundreds of ball bearings and put them in a machine that kinda looks like a pokie machine. When you win you get shitloads more ball bearings and put them back in the machine, presumably until you lose. These places are everywhere and are insane. The noise these machines make is deafening. Added to the mania are slot machines which are SOOOO noisy (and take your money) These places are always packed and businessmen sit at machines for hours. A thick layer of smoke sits above the machines. If you've seen lost in translation scarlet and bill murray run thru one of these places after they leave a club. Mayhem.
4. Waste all their money in arcades. Arcades are everywhere and are full of all sorts of people playing any number of ludicrous games. Games like the dancing game and the drum game and stuff are taken to a whole new level here. The level of ability is quite extraordinary to watch. I get the feeling these people are autistic.
5. Choose inapproprate jobs. One of my students is a surgeon who has these horrible sores all over his hands. What from? He's allergic to latex. Brilliant choice of profession.
6. Have stupid but entertaining ads. TV ads here seem to have three rules. 1. Someone has to be doing something wacky. 2. There has to be a giant inflatable/plush/costumed 'thing' 3. The jingle has to be composed on a keyboard from the 100 Yen shop (that's $1)

So there u have it. Some of the wacky things japanese people do. I'll post some more as they amuse me.
